Install "Ribbon Root" to Nook Tablet (8gb or 16gb)

Updated 9/17/2012 – I no longer recommend this option. Instead, visit our new article… Root for Nook Tablet 1.4.3”  For an introduction to rooting and descriptions of other options, see our article… Intro to Rooting & Modding Nook Tablet.

Updated 8/19/2012 to add caution to users of BN v.1.4.3

How to install Veronica’s “Ribbon Root”:

This is a SIMPLE process to ROOT your Nook Tablet (8 or 16) & add functionality with Veronica’s “Ribbon Root” customized ROM. Includes video & links to files. Installs Google Play Store (Android Market), several new apps, an optional user interface, & root access. HOWEVER, it appears to NOT work with the newer versions of B&N operating system (v.1.4.3 and later). In such cases, I recommend that you select a different option. I recommend our article “Root for Nook Tablet 1.4.3” which installs Jelly Bean – the newest version of Android.

This article describes a process that will ROOT the Nook Tablet (8gb or 16gb). See the intro article here for a comparison of this other ROMS. Rooting your device is perfectly legal (at the time of writing) but doing so will most likely void your warranty and also has the potential of “bricking” your device, so you do so at your own risk.

RibbonRootAfter you have read the warnings (and disregarded them ;_)  ), be sure to follow this instruction closely, so as NOT to introduce additional problems in your Nook!

Actually, this process is very easy and it will not make any tremendous changes on your Nook. However, it will add some very significant capabilities:

  • The addition of the Android Play Store/Market allows the installation of thousands of previously unavailable apps
  • You will have the ability to “sideload” apps from other markets (such as the Amazon AppStore)
  • You will have an OPTION to use a different User Interface (UI)
  • Your Nook will be rooted which will allow you to change almost anything on the device
  • Plus others.

To see a more complete listing of capabilities and to get more direct support, visit the development thread at:  http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494367

Prerequisites:

Process:

  1. Copy the ROM (still in zip) to the root of the SDCard.
  2. Power off the Nook.
  3. Insert the CWM (bootable) SDCard into the Nook.
  4. Power on the Nook & boot into CWM
  5. Wait until CWM is completely initialized (blue menu appears)
  6. Change the SDCard (if using separate cards)
  7. Select “wipe data/factory reset” & press the Nook button / Select the “Yes” option and press the Nook button
  8. Select the “wipe cache partition” and agree
  9. Select the “advanced” option & then select “wipe dalvik” & agree
  10. Press the POWER button to go back to the main menu
  11. Select “install zip from sdcard”
  12. Select “choose zip from sdcard”
  13. Locate and select your ROM’s zip file & press the Nook button / Select the “Yes” option
  14. Wait until the update is complete (CWM menu returns active). This can take a few minutes.
  15. Press the POWER button to go back to the main menu
  16. Remove the SDCard from the Nook
  17. Select the “reboot system now” and press “Nook” button to execute the command.
  18. WAIT. The first boot after doing a factory reset (or flashing a ROM) will often take from 2-6 minutes (sometimes even longer).

Procedure:

  • Your Nook should now reboot and come up in the (nearly) normal B&N setup function. (You will see the lady suggesting that you view their video). You must now complete the registration & setup.
  • When you have finished registration & setup, I recommend that you make a BACKUP using CMW. For instructions, see our guide here.
  • Then play with the device, add apps, change the UI, etc. When you have it like you like it, make ANOTHER backup.
  • Use as is, change, modify, or flash a different ROM (or even flash back to stock).

As always, your feedback is important. Please leave a comment and tell us what is good and/or bad about this guide & how it can be improved.

    Hi Ray,
    Two questions:

    1. Will this work with the Nook Tablet 8gb version?
    2. If I already have CWM recovery installed internally on the NT, can I just flash the ROM zip file from the SD Card?

    Thanks,
    Dan

I do NOT recommend the “Ribbon Root” any longer! See the article.

I DO recommend the newer “Jelly Bean & Root for 1.4.3” which will work for all devices & firmware.

      1. Every Nook Tablet guide that I publish has been tested on *MY* 8GB device.
      2. If you already have CWM on EMMC, then you evidently are already rooted. Why would you want to flash the *OLD* Ribbon Root ROM?

If you are speaking of my NEW (1.4.3) root instructions, then you are on the wrong page. However, you may try to use CWM but I do not know if it will work or not.

As I have reported several times, some versions of CWM (and some versions of TWRP) are *NOT* compatible with some of the newer ROMS. That is why I published the guide to go through the extra steps – to ASSURE that it will work (using the files that I have tested).

If your process works, you will have saved a few minutes. If it fails, you can start over at the “Unbrick…” guide.
